What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Many of Lifetime Dental patients fear dental visits when they register as new patients; it’s normal and nothing to be ashamed of. We utilize FDA-approved medication to induce a calm, relaxed state. At Lifetime Dental, we are use sedation dentistry to make you comfortable during routine checkups, preventive and restorative dental procedures, or cosmetic dentistry treatments.
The most common types of sedation dentistry include the following:
E

Nitrous oxide

A gas that relaxes you during the procedure. It wears off quickly, so your dentist might let you drive yourself home after the appointment.
E

Oral sedatives

Oral sedatives, such as diazepam, also help relax patients during dental procedures. You typically take them an hour or so before your appointment. You’re fully awake but less anxious, and you might feel a little sleepy and tired until it goes out of your system.
E

Intravenous sedatives

Intravenous, or IV, sedatives can put you in varying stages of consciousness. This is also known as general anesthesia and will put you into a deep sleep until it wears off.
If you prefer to go through sedation dentistry, but you are sure about how it works and whether it a preferred method to calm you down during your procedures, talk to your provider at Lifetime Dental about it first. Please, mention any allergic reactions you’ve experienced in the past, especially to anesthesia, so your dental professional can make safe and educated recommendations that fit your health conditions with minimal side effects.
In addition, you can discuss local anesthetics, drugs which numb your mouth during a dental procedure so you don’t experience pain, but won’t put you to sleep like IV Sedation does.
